Webinar Description:
The use of platelet concentrates has had a long history of use in various fields of medicine as an autologous source of growth factors fabricated utilizing centrifugation of blood under various conditions. Over the past 10 years, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has seen a steady increase in utilization for a variety of medical procedures due to its lack of anti-coagulation factors favoring fibrin clot formation and faster wound healing. This talk aims to highlight the recent advancements made with respect to the newest formulations of platelet concentrates including recent developments in horizontal centrifugation. Thereafter, the Bio-Heat technology will be presented with the ability to extend the working properties of PRF from 2-3 weeks to 4-6 months. Lastly, focus on orthopedics in the TM joint and uses to rehab athletes and pain.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Optimization of protocols for any centrifugation device
  2. Update on Bio-Heat technology and the ability to extend the working properties of PRF from 2-3 weeks to 4-6 months
  3. Launch of the Bio-Cool technology
  4. New uses of PRF in Periodontology and the TM Joint
  5. Applications in orthopedics and uses to rehab athletes and pain

Webinar Recording Now Available - How to Make Evidence Based Dentistry Relevant https://www.aacfp.org/news/666567/ https://www.aacfp.org/news/666567/

Webinar Description:
Evidence-based medicine and dentistry are often considered problematic for many reasons. Evidenced-based concepts have been misused by healthcare practitioners, lecturers, and by third-party payers, thus giving the concept a negative connotation. However, not using evidence and treating based on the issue of clinical experience alone, leads to inappropriate and inaccurate assumptions of mechanisms, overzealous belief in systems, high level inappropriate expectations, and treatment agendas that remain stagnant because of the belief system that has been created. We will review exactly what Sackett, the father of evidence-based medicine, described and how, when applied appropriately, we can use evidence-based medicine to help us in our diagnosis and treatment and continue to grow and adapt as more information becomes available to us through quality research. We will show examples of myths and facts using the role of AHI is sleep medicine and the use of anterior midpoint stops in sleep and pain as examples.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To identify the comprehensive components of evidence-based medicine as originally written by Sackett
  2. To apply evidence-based concepts in the process of the diagnostic process as well as treatment decision-making.
  3. To appreciate the importance of the ability to determine quality evidence that will then be used in the all-important risk-benefit treatment decision-making process.

Webinar Recording Now Available -The Forgotten Tissue- The TM Joint Disk https://www.aacfp.org/news/656673/ https://www.aacfp.org/news/656673/

The TM joint plays a vital role in the growth and development of the mandible and the maxilla, in the maintenance of normal pharyngeal airway volume, in facial esthetics through normal facial growth, and in occlusion through maintaining a stable and repeatable condylar position. Despite the importance of the disk, it is ignored in many cases because some clicking joints do not hurt. The medical and dental professions have defined joint problems through pain. While some jaw joint problems will hurt, the more typical presentation of structurally altered joints involves a change in occlusion. This program will review case studies with both MRI and CBCT imaging and explain how imaging will influence the prognosis discussion with every patient.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand normal and abnormal TM joints in MRI and CBCT images.
2. Recognize that most common clinical manifestations of malocclusion at the tooth level typically begin with a malocclusion at the joint level.
3. Learn how to explain treatment options so patients understand the pros and cons of each option based on the TM joint anatomy.

We face a severe health crisis, that is a much larger pandemic than Covid19! The western lifestyle of poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive weight, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, stress, periodontal & periapical oral disease, breathing disordered sleep and GERD, are examples of the co-morbidities which put every one of us at risk in a viral world!

Dentistry is the medical specialty of oral medicine. Oral health is directly related to complete health: the oral systemic connection. We must ask: "How we can stand on the frontlines fighting the health crisis that is destroying our nation?" The answer is through developing a new model that integrates Dentistry & Medicine = Integrative Dental Medicine (IDM). This model must create both healthier patients and practices.
